The demo looked perfect.
The interface was polished. The data loaded instantly. Every button worked exactly as expected.
Then the client asked to create a new record.
Awkward silence.
"Oh, we haven't built that part yet. This is just the frontend mockup."
Translation: The demo was fake. Hardcoded data. No backend. No database. No real functionality. Just a pretty facade designed to pass a checkpoint and trigger a payment.
I've seen this scam more times than I can count.
Here's how agencies fake progress:
→ Build static HTML/CSS with hardcoded data that looks like it's pulling from a database
→ Show the same three records in every view because nothing is actually dynamic
→ Demo only the "happy path" because edge cases don't exist yet
→ Avoid live interactions like creating, editing, or deleting anything
→ Say "we're finalizing the backend" while showing a frontend that's disconnected from reality
How to spot a fake demo in 30 seconds:
→ Ask them to create a new record live, right now
→ Ask to see the database or backend admin panel
→ Ask what happens if you enter an invalid email or leave a field blank
→ Ask them to refresh the page and confirm the data persists
→ Ask to see the API endpoints or network requests in the browser console
If they hesitate, pivot, or say "we'll add that next sprint," you're looking at smoke and mirrors.
